It depends on where you are getting the Wii from. If it a new one from a store, such as GameStop, then it will work just fine. If you are buying a used one off of ebay or something, you may have reason to be concerned. Older versions of the Wii had problems reading dual-layer discs due to the disc laser getting a little dirty. The newer versions of the Wii had a stronger laser to combat this problem. However, if you get the Wii and it does have issues playing Brawl, you can send the Wii in to Nintendo and they can fix it for a small fee.

All MODERN DVD drives (be it in a DVD Player, DVD-ROM drive or in a game console) can read dual-layer discs (dual-layer burning support is a different matter).

The only reason why Super Smash Bros. Brawl gets singled out on the Wii is because it's one of the major games that's on a dual-layer disc. While he Wii can be a little more finicky with dual-layer discs, as long as you're not in a smoking environment (as the smoke particles can get on the disc lens, causing problems reading that 2nd layer... but can be fixed with the Wii cleaning disc), you should be OK.

All discs were single layer before SSBB. There is no way to know before buying the system whether or not it's going to have an issue. But the issue is simply a dirty laser lens. Nintendo will fix the problem for you if you have that issue, or you can buy cleaning kits.

Only old Wii's have this problem, the new ones don't.
