The wii can read DVDs yes. The games are DVDs, although it cannot play DVD movies. If your wii is "chipped" or modded then it is possible to play them. This apparently lowered the cost of the system although i don't really think it did. All it needed was the licensing fees. To be honest there is no real need for them as most households will have a few DVD players currently mine has 8. Also for $20 you can buy a cheap one. Another possibility is if playing DVD movies on them then the laser could wear out alot quicker.

There is rumors that Nintendo will allow a download which will be a DVD player and come with the licensing.

Unfortunately, no.

However, I hear that Nintendo is making a Wii that does play DVD's, or they're making a new Wii Update so that DVD's can be played.

don't know but it can play game cube games if you have the actual disc. FOr some reason I love the old Paper Mario the ten thousand year old door and I play that on my Wii. I just had to get a memory card for came cube which plugs into the top of Wii oh and a camecube controller

I'm sorry to report that the Wii does not have DVD-Video support.

The Wii has the hardware to support video DVD's, but it does NOT have any official software to do this.

There, however, an UNOFFICIAL method to enable DVD-Video playback by installing & using the Homebrew Channel.

WARNING: INSTALLING & USING THE HOMEBREW CHANNEL VIOLATES USAGE POLICY & WILL AVOID YOUR WARRANTY... NEEDLESS TO SAY, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

If you really want to try & enable DVD-Video support, do a search online for the Homebrew Channel.

No the Wii doesn't play DVDs but if you put a converted video on to a sd card and download some software then you can play the videos off the SD. I hope this helps. =D

No because that function for a game console is useless now.

DVD players are $20 now. We have three in our house.

Besides, the Wii is a game console-- not a multimedia device or whatever the hell the 360 and PS3 are trying to differentiate themselves as.
