Question:
Will Wii games purchased in the UK work on a Wii console purchased in Canada?

We live in Canada and want to get a Wii - however, we want to buy some games from the UK which we can't find over here (namely, Dr Who) and Amazon Uk has some reduced games at the moment so we'd probably buy several. Can anyone please advise? Thanks

I can't say specifically for the Wii as I have no experience with it, but I do know that the so called "regional codings" do have some impact on computer games.

When I was in Japan I asked if the computer games they sold there would work on my American computer. They said they would not because of the regional codings.

I know British DVDs are region-coded 2 and American/Canadian DVDs are region coded 1. This means that in standard DVD players that were made in one region will not play DVDs made in another. This is the same with DVDs made anywhere else in the world that have different coding numbers. There are ways around this if you have your DVD player re-formatted or play from a downloadable computer program called VLC.

Again, I don't know specifically about the Wii, but since the same problem exists in DVDs and computer games I imagine it would be the same with the Wii. There are probably similar ways to get by such problems too.

As disappointing as this may be, you will either have to -Get a UK Wii which reads PAL or -Move to USA/Canada to purchase NTSC games. There may be some modifications out there that can tweak the Wii to be able to read both PAL and NTSC, but those mods are unauthorized and are not covered by Nintendo's Warranty.

No I'm sorry, I've purchased consoles in Canada/USA and games from Europe and Australia before and they don't intermix. You see European and Australian disks/consoles are a special model called PAL, whereas USA/Canada are NTSC models. You can buy a game from the US, Canada, possibly Mexico and even a game from Japan (they are NTSC too), but a PAL/European game will not work in your system sorry.

you can softmod your wii. google bannerbomb to get started. once you install the homebrew channel, google homebrew browser(you'll need internet on the wii). go to the media section & install gecko os. load gecko using the homebrew channel, go to config settings & force whatever mode you need to. you can also use cheat codes. google wiird codes to find them.
