OFFICIALLY, the Wii doesn't support DVD-Video playback.

While the Wii does have a DVD-ROM drive in it, it doesn't have to codecs nor the software to play video DVD's.

UNOFFICIALLY, you can add DVD-Video playback support my modifying your Wii by adding the Homebrew Channel, DVDX (required for DVD-Video playback support) & MPlayer CE (the program needed to play the video DVD's). HOWEVER, please be aware that these modifications WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY (assuming you still have one)... SO DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK (Don't blame me if you turn your Wii into an expensive paperweight)!!!

If you're willing to soft-mod your system... go ahead! Just be aware that playback may not be totally desirable (due to hardware limitations).

If you're not willing to soft-mod your system... leave the movie DVD's at home.

Hope this helps!

It doesn't play DVDs. It's the only lacking feature on a wii. A PS3 plays DVDs and Blu ray, an Xbox 360 plays DVDs

Yes, you can play DVDs on your Wii. But you need to use some sort of special tools that can easily improve your Wii to be a professional DVD player..

it really doesn't BUT if you get it modded then you'll be able to play dvds and play burned games.

but i wouldn't use it as a dvd because you'll be over using the lens for no reason because a dvd player only cost like 20 dollars and to have the wii lens stop working is worse than spending 20 bucks.

don't do it. Its not going to cause your wii to catch on fire, but its not going to work, so don't try it. If you want to watch movies, get a portable dvd player, or just bring your dvd player instead of your wii.
