It's the cable itself that's causing the issue.

You are trying to hook up the Wii using composite cables (with yellow for video, white and red for audio) into an component input (with red, green, blue for video, red and white for audio) on the back of your tv.

The video signal is sent differently through the cables. That's why you are not getting a color signal. Some tvs work alright with this though and display then mostly right. Some do not.

I had a similar issue with my Wii a few weeks ago. It was in color but there was lag in the video. Not much, but enough to throw off my timing of jumps in Super Mario Bros Wii. I ended up ordering composite cables from Amazon. Works much better now.

Here is what I got. I didn't have to get the official cables for it to work.

The red/blue/green are component (high def cables) and the yellow cables are composite (stand def).

You'll want to get the component cables for your Wii, as it will run in 480p (and in color of course).
