I have been reading a lot of thumbs down, but unfortunately just came home from the store with one for "someone" on Christmas morning. pros? cons? I'm a 40 yr old mom, so please keep game jargon to a minimum.

I do not believe those reviews at all. I own the game with a Wii Zapper, and I have to say, it is pretty amazing.
The Wii Zapper gives the feel of a gun when playing shooting games. With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it indeed gives a more realistic feel to the game. If you do not use the Wii Zapper, you will be playing Call of Duty holding the Wii Remote and Nunchuk similar to games such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Super Mario Galaxy.
I believe most of those reviews are influenced on the control setup though, not the actual Wii Zapper. For example, reloading a gun in the game in Call of Duty: World At War was done by pressing a button on the Wii Remote. In Call of Duty, Modern Warfare, you have to shake the Nunchuk to reload, which is not favorable in the Wii Zapper setup.

it relies upon, in case you start up up utilising the wiimote without the zapper...you become greater used to it, for my area i play without the zapper because of the fact i began without it and have been given used to the controlls and gameplay.

Its not bad, but it'll take a while to get used to...
But the controls are still way better without it...
