I want to buy Super Smash Bros Brawl but it isnt released in the UK until May! It's released in the US in March - if I bought it from there would it be playable on my console (which was bought in the UK)?

Unfortunetly, no you cannot.

The following game system are region locked, meaning that you connot play games from another region on your system:

1- Nintendo Wii, Gamecube

2- XBOX 360, XBOX

3- Playstation 2, Playstation

The following systems are region free, you can play games from any region on any system (but not movies):

1- Playstation 3 (The region lock still applies to PS2 games)

2- Nintendo DS, Gameboy Advance, SNES

3- PSP

The different regions are:

1- North America

2- Japan

3- Europe (including the UK)

4- Australia and NewZealand

Nickolas is basically right as far as ps3 games are concerned. But I suspect you may be asking about ps2 games, since after all, ps3 games being region-free means they don't have NTSC-J or NTSC-U/C designations in the first place. A 60gb ps3 bought from Japan can play any ps3 game, however it can't play ps2 games from out of region, whether it's a PAL or NTSC region. Unlike the ps2, the ps3 can't be modded to bypass this so that's life. By the way, it's NTSC-U/C, not NTSC-US. The U/C stands for United States and Canada.

NTSC games will not play on a PAL wii. Even if you mod your console, there is no benefit, since many non-region games still won't play and some may brick your console because of updates. Definitely only use the same region games for your console. The DS is the only region-free gaming console.

Nope, the Wii isn't region free so you'll need a PAL (European) Version of the game to play it.

Unless you wanna import a US Wii - then you could play NTSC games.

no the wii has a region lock unfourtuantly but you could hack it with a wii key (voids warranty and i think online play can get terminated) which will let yo play imported games.

(US Wii won't work in UK)

I'm not an expert but I can tell you about another Nintendo product. I got some DS games from Canada and they play fine on a UK DS Lite. Does this help?

this is not true, you can use US games in the UK providing you use a freeloader which can be found here: http://www.codejunkies.com
