Yes. Mario 3D World is a Wii U game. The game will not play on a Wii.

Wii U is Nintendo's new system. However, it plays all old Wii games as well since it's backward compatible, like how Wii played Gamecube games. Super Mario 3D World is a Wii U game, so you DO need to have the Wii U. I got my Wii U just for that game and it was worth every single penny.

You don't even need the Wii! Just simply place the disk into the disk drive of your DVD player, press the home button on the Wii Remote, and it will download the necessary updates for the game to be played on your DVD player. After that, you should be able to play all Wii, Wii U, Ps3, Ps4, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 games all from the convenience of your DVD player! Happy gaming!

To be completely honest, you're the only person that I've seen who's actually upset about this. If you're this upset, don't buy it. That simple. Get Super Smash Bros. 4, which will actually have online multiplayer (since Brawl did).
