If enough gamers ask for it, then I think Nintendo has no options but to make it better.
As it stands right now, Nintendo still isn't sold on the online gaming thing. Nintendo still thinks that online play is just a fad that's going to go away. So until Nintendo believes that online play is here to stay, the Wii's online is not going to get any better.

It's not that Nintendo thinks online is going to be a fad. It's a combination of two other things:
1) They believe online play should be free, but aren't going to really push it until they can find a business model that allows for that and doesn't create a loss for them.
2) They don't see online gaming as a communal experience. And unfortunately, most online games ignore local multiplayer completely.

Actually it won't. Not in the Wii's lifetime anyway. Perhaps in the next installment of consoles they may finally make their internet capabilities better.
