I chose the "Manual" option but I am unable to get out of first gear. What buttons do I have to push to shift gears. I am using the nunchuck.

Manuel already made you think of gears? You don't change gears. Automatic and Manuel are for drifting. Automatic means you automatically drift when you turn. Manuel means you have to press the drift button to drift and you can do a mini-turbo if you do it right.

Like many other people said, Manual means the type of boost. Automatic means no boost. For karts there are two levels of boost on the manual setting, for bikes only one. To use the boot, when turn press B, and press the control stick in the direction you are turning. Eventually sparks will shoot up behind the back wheel(s) and if you keep turning, the sparks will turn orange (Karts only).

Hope that helped,

If you are using the wheel on automatic, you can't. The only boosts you will get are from the "prize boxes." You can use those by pressing the button under the wheel.

However you can use the mote+nunchuck in manual mode to get special boosts and drifts.

You choose between the manual and automatic DRIFT option, not transmission there. There's no transmission in Mario Kart.

There are no gears in MarioKart. What the manual/automatic refers to is the drifting boost.
