Does the Wii have DVD capabilites? I heard that when it first came out, it didn't, but that new editions being made this year should. I also heard that those new editions are only being made in Japan. Can the Wii (or will it) play DVDs?

Nintendo are currently working on a method for the Wii to play DVDs. No information has been released as to wether it will require designing a new Wii model or if they can do it with a firmware update or channel download. If it requires building a new Wii model then it will be released in Japan first and if it sells well then it will be released to the rest of the world. But dont get your hopes up...they did this with the gamecube and that didnt sell very well

The wii does not currently have dvd/cd playback capabilities. Nintendo stated that excluding these capabities were necessary for keeping cost down and the fact the most people already have home dvd players and therefore was not a necessity. Nintendo did state that in the future, newer models made support such functions.

Unfortunately, The Wii does not play DVDs. (I wish it did!) But to be honest, it's good that it doesn't. Nintendo made the Nintendo Wii system because it's a video-game system. PS3 and Xbox 360 have all of that crap, but why? Nintendo is all about playing video games, and having fun. That's what makes Wii so unique. It's simply fun video games!

Just like the first comment said why would anyone care weather or not the Wii has a DVD player you probably have more than one dvd player in your house right now. how many more could you possibly need.

No it can not, and from what I've heard thats not going to change. I heard Nintendo say that they think people already own dvd players, which is true, so why give it that capability and lose money? Sounds like good reasoning to me.

No, and I'm glad for it - I have a perfectly good DVD player, thankyouverymuch. Tacking on a 200-dollar part I'll never use just makes me angry.
