I'm thinking about purchasing a Wii but I also need a new DVD player. Will the wii play dvds or not? I've yet to get a straight answer from anyone.

Even though it uses a DVD drive, it doesn't play DVD's. There might be hack where you could force it to do it, but Out of the Box, not a chance. You will have to spend 50 bucks on a DVD player.

Ordinarily no. The wii does, however, use a DVD drive and as such there may be methods available to allow for the playback of DVD movies on your wii console but, they are not licensed by Nintendo and shouldn't be used by anyone unless they're willing to face the consequences. One such method is explained on this webpage http://best-honest-reviews.com/unlock_your_nintendo_wii.html
In the past Nintendo has announced for a DVD playback-capable iteration of the Wii to be released, but we have yet to see them on store shelves. (SOURCE: http://www.reghardware.com/2007/11/09/wii_dvd_playback_delayed/ )
Though, no official release of DVD playing has been released, movies can still be watched from a Wii console. In an agreement with Netflix, Nintendo allows movie rentals through a wireless broadband connection. ( http://www.nintendo.com/wii/netflix )

No the wii doesn't play DVD movies. The games are on DVD discs, but unless you use a third-party device (not recommended), you can't watch DVD movies. Same for CDs.

No buy an Xbox 360. Unless you are a Mario series fanatic you'll enjoy it more than the Wii.

No, it doesn't. If you want a game system that plays DVDs, go for a PS3 (also plays Blu-Ray) or XBox.
