The Wii CAN play Gamecube games, just place the Gamecube's mini-disc into the Wii (like the Wii games) & when the Wii acknowledges it as a Gamecube game, the Disc Channel will show the Gamecube logo instead of the game's name.
PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING BEFORE STARTING A GAMECUBE GAME!
1) You'll need a Gamecube controller to play a Gamecube game.
2) You'll need a Gamecube memory card to save your progress on a Gamecube game.
3) You MUST TURN OFF your Wii manually when you're done playing the Gamecube game.
The main reasons behind these 3 points is that the Wii loads a minimalistic "Gamecube Only" system that only acknowledges the stuff that the Gamecube would normally accept. This will disable the Wiimotes & all Wii-specific items (SD card reader, WiFi card, USB, ect.).
Hope that helps!

Exactly what Magician said. Even though you cannot use Wii remotes to play a gamecube game, you can use a gamecube controller for SOME of the games.
For example: Mario Kart.

Yes. Although you have to use a Gamecube Controller (Classic Controller doesn't work for this), and if you intend to save, you have to use the Gamecube Memory Card if you intend to save (the Wii's internal memory or SD Card cannot substitute).

*Sigh*
You CANNOT use the wii remote on gamecube games!!!!! It doesn't have the right button layout for it. You DO need a gamecube controller. A classic controller will not work, and a camecube controller is a bit better anyways.

Yes, you can play GameCube games on the Wii. however, you do need a GameCube memory card as well as a GameCube controller to play them.
I just remembered! You can also use a classic controller that is made for the Wii console but i prefer to use the GameCube controller

Yes. Just insert the disc like you would any Wii game, press "Start" on the Disc Channel and the game will play as if it was a Gamecube.
However, you need a Gamecube Controller to play. You can't use the Wii Remote, and you CANNOT use the Classic Controller, like someone before me said. Gamecube games can be played only with the Gamecube controller.
You'll also need a Gamecube Memory Card to save your data.
Slots for both of these items can be found under flaps on top of the Wii, as seen here:
